There's never a quiet breakfast when the sulphur-crested cockatoos arrive.

Each morning they're perched nearby, watching every move we make, hoping a sunflower seed or two might accidentally find its way in their direction. Leave an open packet unattended for even a moment and they'll happily conduct their own "inspection" before flying off with the prize.

They're wonderfully intelligent birds, full of personality and just a little cheeky. I always greet them with a cheerful "Hello Cocky!", secretly hoping that one day one of them might decide to answer me with a "Hello Cocky!" of its own.

Sulphur-crested Cockatoos (Cacatua galerita) are among Australia's most intelligent native birds. They can live for more than 50 years, solve surprisingly complex problems and are well known for learning words and sounds from the people around them.
